This workshop aims to equip university educators with a clear and practical understanding of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model and its transformative impact on teaching and learning. Through a blend of interactive discussions, guided activities, and hands-on practice, participants will explore how PBL shifts the educational process from passive knowledge transmission to active inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking. The workshop emphasizes practical implementation, helping educators move beyond theoretical understanding to actionable strategies that promote student-centered, self-directed learning.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be prepared to design and facilitate PBL sessions in a way that is structured, engaging, and pedagogically sound—ensuring that learners not only acquire knowledge but also develop essential problem-solving and teamwork skills.
By engaging in this workshop, participants will be able to:
Understand Core Principles of PBL
Explain the foundational concepts, goals, and principles of Problem-Based Learning, including its grounding in constructivist and adult learning theories.
Analyze the PBL Process
Describe the stages of a typical PBL cycle—from encountering the problem to identifying learning needs, conducting inquiry, synthesizing knowledge, and reflecting on outcomes.
Differentiate Roles and Responsibilities
Distinguish between the roles of students and facilitators in a PBL environment, recognizing how facilitation promotes autonomy, critical questioning, and collaborative learning.
Experience and Apply PBL Techniques
Participate in a simulated PBL activity to experience group dynamics, facilitator strategies, and student responsibilities firsthand.
Design Effective PBL Sessions
Develop a simple PBL scenario or session plan that includes a well-structured problem, clear learning outcomes, and appropriate facilitation and assessment strategies.
Anticipate Implementation Challenges
Identify common challenges—such as group management, time constraints, and student readiness—that may arise when implementing PBL.
Apply Evidence-Based Solutions
Propose practical, research-informed strategies to overcome challenges and support successful adoption and sustainability of PBL in their courses.
